STEP / MAT / TMUA Tuition
Admissions test preparation can be extremely daunting, and having a private tutor can make a difference to a student's progress and confidence.Â
One difficulty students often come up against whilst preparing for STEP is identifying whether they are struggling with a question because they haven't covered relevant material at A Level yet, or because they just haven't managed to solve it. As private tutors we will take care to track your teacher's progress through the syllabus and select questions for you that are appropriate for the stage of study. We can also teach the occasional part of the syllabus ahead of time if the teaching order isn't particularly compatible with admissions test preparation.
Our tuition involves:
selecting problems, both from past papers and other sources for you to work on your problem solving skills between sessions, informed by which skills we think it would be best for you to work on;
regular review of your solutions to any written component of the test you are taking (applicable to MAT and STEP only) to ensure you are giving enough detail and explaining your solutions to the required standard;
review the test specification with you so that we can teach any topics that are not covered by your A Level specification;
in sessions, working with you to develop your independent problem solving skills by asking leading questions rather than showing you solutions. You will be on your own in the exams, and we want to make sure you develop a toolkit for getting yourself "unstuck";
giving you exercises that "bridge the gap" in difficulty between A Level and the relevant test to allow you to develop confidence solving unfamiliar problems;
closer to the test, help with exam technique and managing timing;
Developing strategies for multiple choice papers (applicable to MAT and TMUA only).
